Creating the habit of self-support

If there’s one thing I’ve become sure of in the last 4+ years of my work, it is this.

Too many professionals are swept up in perfectionism, anxiety and imposter syndrome, and that these beliefs and behaviours fuel burnout.

Resilience is the anti-anxiety solution, but what underpins and cultivates resilience itself?

The habit of self-support.

Self-care gets a lot of attention but self-support goes deeper.

Self-support is the ability to stand alone and survive without relying on others. In the context of perfectionism, anxiety and imposter syndrome, it is the ability to self-counsel, to step outside the blame and shame to remind yourself:

  • who you are;

  • why you do this

  • what the change you want to see is, and

  • where you are heading

For me, the practice of self-support is the act of grounding myself, of getting the bigger picture front and centre and applying the self compassion necessary to take care of my immediate needs and place myself firmly back on the path to where I want to be.

Self-support keeps you going.
Self-support keeps you going where you want to go.
Self-support keeps you sane, healthy and happy amongst it all.

I think we all got played early on, brainwashed into believing that we were only good enough when our work was good enough, that we could only be happy when everyone else was happy, that we would only be deserving of praise and self-support when we had earned it.

I’m sorry, because whoever taught you that, whoever taught me that, was a damned liar.

Self-support is foundational.
